Carrier status
Cystic Fibrosis (CFTR)
~1 in 25
people of Northern European ancestry are CF carriers
Cystic fibrosis causes thick, sticky mucus that damages the lungs, digestive system, and reproductive organs. Although it is most common in people of Northern and Central European ancestry, it occurs in people across all populations, and carrier screening is recommended regardless of ancestry. 23andMe tests for only a limited number of variants, so more comprehensive CF testing should be discussed with interested patients.
