What this means
Your patient's PRS falls in the typical range: their inherited predisposition is similar to or lower than most people's. An absolute risk by a specific age is also calculated, and does not account for lifestyle or rare variants.
A typical PRS does not mean zero risk. Disease still occurs in people with average genetic risk, particularly alongside lifestyle and environmental factors.
Next steps
- Continue standard evidence-based screening and prevention; a typical PRS does not change clinical management
- If the patient also has a strong family history or other indicators of hereditary disease, consider comprehensive genetic testing
How to talk to your patient: "Your genetic risk for [condition] is about average, which is reassuring, but doesn't mean you won't develop the condition. The things we can control (diet, activity, blood pressure, not smoking) still matter a lot."
